Westfield Friends

Mission By Grade Level

Pre-Kindergarten

  1. Collecting Tabs for the Ronald McDonald House -We will be collecting pull-off tabs from beverage cans. The tabs are taken to The Ronald McDonald House. They recycle the tabs for money. The Ronald McDonald House raises approximately $400 a month from these tabs. Each classroom has a tab container. We collect the tabs all year long.
  2. Also, every other week, one Pre-K family provides two grocery bags of fresh fruit and vegetables which are delivered to this special family. The children learn that there are other families who need help through their hands-on shopping trip. We shop all year long.

Kindergarten

  1. Undie Sunday - Students collecting underwear, socks, and t-shirts for those less fortunate than themselves during January and February.

First Grade

  1. Food For Friday - Each week, students are encouraged by their teachers to bring in a particular type of food. For example, one week may be pasta products, the following may be boxes of cereal. This food is given to local, needy families.
  2. Collecting Used Eye Glasses - Used eyeglasses are collected by the first grade to benefit people who are in need of glasses, but cannot afford to purchase them. The eyeglasses are delivered to "Lions Club Eye Glass Centers".

Second Grade

  1. Used, Hazardous Battery Collection: The second graders collect used batteries throughout the school year. However, ONLY rechargeable and button type batteries are collected as hazardous waste. All alkaline batteries (A, C, D, AAA and E types) can now be discarded in the regular trash at home. Second grade will collect the hazardous batteries, which will then be taken to the nearest disposal center.

Third Grade

  1. Make a Child Smile Project: The third graders contract with their parents to perform various tasks around the house or outdoors to earn pledge support. Pledge money will be donated to the "Smile Train" Make A Child Smile jar in our classroom, and will help provide a child with cleft palette corrective surgery, follow-up medications, and treatment.
  2. Pennies for Peace: This activity occurs across the school, co-ordinated by the third grade. Our students enjoy collecting change that can make a difference in the lives of students in less developed countries than our own.

Fourth Grade

  1. Collecting for UNICEF (last two weeks of October): Children throughout the school are made more aware of the extreme poverty and lack of medicine in third world countries. Money is collected, particularly on Halloween night, but also in the days leading up to and after. The third grade students then count what has been collected and a check is sent to UNICEF.

Fifth Grade

  1. Stamp Collection: The fifth grade will continue to collect used stamps. The stamps are then passed along to Priscilla Adams, who sends them to groups who work to sort, soak, and dry them. These groups receive money for them, which is then used to purchase much-needed items. Some assisted-living facilities have stamp groups doing this process, which allows them to purchase books for their libraries. This project is on going throughout the school year.
  2. Making Cards and Decorations: The fifth-graders have a number of periods during which they make cheerful cards, holiday cards and decorations for the residents of assisted-living facilities throughout the year.

Sixth Grade

  1. Collecting Food and Materials Needed to Care For Animals Living at the Burlington County Animal Shelter.
  2. Palmyra Cove Clean-up (Fall & Spring): To further our studies in ecology and the conservation of our planet's resources, sixth graders will devote some time to cleaning up trash and debris at the Palmyra Cove. The project will also benefit the visitors and resident wildlife of this wonderful park.

Seventh and Eighth Grade

  1. Holiday Gift Program: During the months of November and December (ending on December 18th), the seventh grade class, with the help of the eighth grade class, will help collect, sort and pack gifts for the needy contributed by the Westfield community.
  2. Clothing For The Needy: One Friday per month, the seventh grade will sort clothing, donated by the Westfield community for the less fortunate, to allow them a hands-on opportunity to help the needy. The clothing will be packed, and then distributed to the needy families.
  3. Eighth Grade: Palmyra Cove Clean-up (Fall & Spring). To further our studies in ecology and the conservation of our planet's resources, we will devote some time to cleaning up trash and debris at the Palmyra Cove. The project will also benefit the visitors and resident wildlife of this wonderful park.
