Student Responsibilities

Academic achievement, its integrity and honesty, is each student's responsibility. The school supports students in being open, direct and truthful in all endeavors.

The school calendar carefully notes school days and scheduled holidays. Each day at school is an organized, planned, and purposeful series of learning experiences. Missing days at school interrupts this progression of learning. Unscheduled holidays taken by families are considered unexcused absences. The school does not provide "make-up" instruction or travel school work for these days. The school does feel obligated to provide work for student absences due to illness, emergency, bereavement, or religious observances.
Being late or tardy for school is to be avoided.
Notation is made on permanent records of school attendance and tardiness.

Students are promoted each year according to teacher recommendation with approval given by the Headmaster.
Students are retained in a class by teacher recommendation and the decision of the Headmaster. Parents are a critical part of this important decision.

Portable computers, electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and entertainment paraphernalia are not considered necessary for school use. Calculators and electronic organizers are useful and permissible at the discretion of the classroom teacher. Proper care of these instruments is each student's responsibility.

The selling, trading, unauthorized exchanging or swapping of goods or services by students is not permissible.

Food Consumption
The school lunchroom and other occasionally designated areas are where food is consumed. Candy, chewing gum, or other snack foods (unless activity oriented) are not permitted.

Out-of-school Activities
All activities under Westfield's auspices are conducted with all school rules and expectations in operation at all times.

Illness and Injuries
All illnesses and injuries occurring during the school day must be promptly reported to the school nurse.

Students who are transferred in or out of the school must follow the policies established by Westfield or the receiving or sending institution. Original student records are directly transmitted to receiving schools and only original records are acceptable for admission to the school.

Suspension and Expulsion
There are rare occasions when a student's behavior or deportment prohibits them from fully participating in the life of the school. The Headmaster may remove a student for a short time (suspension) or permanently (expulsion) for behavior which is considered egregious and unsupportable within a Friends school community dedicated to peace and harmony.

Reenrollment contracts for the coming school year are issued each spring and detailed at that time. Issuance of contracts may be withheld at the discretion of the school.
