Making Aromatherapy Dough: Family Fun with Self-Care in Mind
Flow and Me
Life moves fast... Sometimes it feels like the moment you blink five years go by and you question how did I get here --- to this moment in time. For years, it felt like there was an invisible tug of war between flow and me. Where I would not allow myself to practice flow and self-care.
In positive psychology, practicing flow allows one to be fully engaged, energized, and immersed in the activity they are doing. Flow helps one to be fully present, not distracted by the internal and external factors entwined in one's life. Flow encourages us to utilize mindfulness.
Life-Long Learning Journey
I will admit, I am not an expert in flow. However, I am committed to the life-long learning journey of practicing flow because through mindfulness I am able to fully embrace all the light, gratitude, and beauty of life going on within and around me.
There are many ways one can practice flow; yet, one way I encourage flow is through fostering family fun activities that also encompass self-care. Oftentimes, I felt self-care was not tangible for me because there were two issues: Time management, and trying to copy and paste another's self-care routine. But when I created my own self-care plan I felt encouraged, empowered, and energized.
What is Self-Care?
Self-care is a positive practice or activity that one utilizes to promote better physical, emotional, and mental well-being. The great thing about self-care is, just like flow, there's no age limitation, and when we practice self-care we foster zest, happiness, and refreshment.
Family Fun + Self-Care
Family Fun Night is a staple in our household and tonight we decided to create aromatherapy dough together. Aromatherapy or Essential Oils Therapy utilizes natural plant-based extracts that have the ability to improve one's physical and emotional well-being through promoting calmness and helping to reduce stress and anxiety.
We utilized all organic or natural ingredients but please feel free to utilize whatever type of ingredients you have that go along with the materials list. If you don't have coconut oil use any type of oil you have on hand (Olive Oil, Vegetable Oil, Etc).
- Love is always the first ingredient
- 1 cup of Flour
- 1/3 cup of Salt (We used Pink Himalayan Salt)
- 2 teaspoons of Cream of Tartar
- 1 cup of Water
- 1 tablespoon of Coconut Oil
- Wax Paper
- Optional: Food Coloring
- Optional: Glitter
- Airtight Container
- 10 -15 drops of Essential Oil (Our Favorites Listed Below)
Family Fun Aromatherapy Dough Instructions:
Mix the flour, salt, and cream of tartar together in a saucepan.
Stir in the water, coconut oil, food coloring (optional), and glitter (optional).
Heat the ingredients on a low heat setting on the stove, stirring often until the dough begins to form into a ball. This step can take anywhere between 20 seconds - 3 minutes.
Remove the dough from the saucepan and put the dough on a piece of wax paper to cool for about 15 minutes.
Once the dough has cooled, knead the dough in your hands for about two minutes so that it becomes stretchy and smooth.
Add in 10 - 15 drops of essential oils by putting a few holes in your dough and filling it up with essential oils. Knead the dough so that the essential oils are mixed thoroughly throughout the aromatherapy dough.
Store your aromatherapy dough in an airtight container. The container can be plastic like the picture displayed or a glass container. An airtight container will allow your dough to last for approximately 3 months.
