The program works with local communities, organizations, and volunteers, like our students, to help horseshoe crabs, which are vital to the ecosystem, especially for shorebirds like Red Knots.

During spawning, horseshoe crabs can be overturned by waves and struggle to right themselves. Volunteers gently flip them over and release them back into the water. Horseshoe crabs are a keystone species in the Delaware Bay ecosystem, and their eggs are a vital food source for migrating shorebirds.
