Our recent exploration of seeds and flowers has turned our classroom into a vibrant "Art Garden." In preparation for our upcoming art show, students created multi-media flowers using cup rims, cupcake liners, and handprint leaves. We also collaborated on a large-scale cardboard flower, using textured tissue paper and student-written labels to identify the roots, stem, leaves, and petals.
Beyond art, our young scientists have been busy with hands-on botany:
-
Planting: For Earth Day, students planted green beans and marigolds, observing their growth over several weeks.
-
Observation: Using magnifying glasses and microscopes, we compared the size and shape of zinnia seeds, marigold seeds, and various bulbs.
-
Experiments: To test the necessity of sun and water, we are currently comparing plants in optimal conditions versus those in the dark. Tomorrow, we begin a "color-changing" carnation experiment to visualize how stems transport water!
