Welcome back and Happy New Year!  PK Early Literacy News
We continue to work on our fine and gross motor skills.  We have been painting, creating, cutting and writing while practicing using the pinchy crab hold.  We have started the Fundations program and worked on the letter and sound of t.  Our centers related to "t" include stories, art, and early literacy skills.  We start off our morning doing the Fundations ABC warm up.  This week we will look at "b" and start  "f".  Children are using the sky, grass, plane, and worm line to print these letters.   We continue to learn to express our ideas through our drawings and shared thoughts.

In science, we are looking at the Five Senses.  We begin with the sense of touch and we are creating a classroom touch table.   We are learning about how our senses help us learn about what's happening around us.  We will do a few experiments related to touch this week.

Here are a few books we read together:

Where's My Teddy? By Jez Alborough
Teddy Bear Picnic
Ten Black Dots By Donald Crews
The Teddy Bear By David McPhail

PK Math News
We continue working on numbers 1 to 10 with identifying, counting, sorting, and beginning to print each number while using a variety of manipulatives.  We are learning how to count using tally marks and had fun using craft sticks and spaghetti as the tally marks.  The tricky part is getting to 5 and remembering the seatbelt across the four tally's.
PK Art News
The Pre-K Art Show featuring famous artists is scheduled for Friday, May 24th; mark your calendars for this special event for families! Our current artist is Alma Thomas. She is an American artist and the first graduate of the new Fine Arts Department at Howard University in 1924.  She was an art teacher for 35 years and continued to paint into her golden years.  She is best known for creating bold, colorful abstract art.  One of her paintings hung in the White House during President Obama's terms.  We painted a version of our own with colorful rows and then with our 6th grade buddies we made colorful circles to match her art that hung in the White House (see pics below)
