Weeks 10/30-11/13

Students will continue to have have spelling tests every Friday. We continue to practice that spelling pattern weekly, this week it's long and short U. I’ve also added more complicated words that use the same pattern  to the spelling list to challenge students who are performing at a higher level. We are digging into our Units for both reading and writing workshop (RW & WW). In RW, we are learning that readers need to really listen to understand the main idea of each chapter. We are learning how to separate small details from larger themes. In WW, students are working hard on the concept of rereading like detectives. Writers reread their writing like detectives, checking the ending punctuation to make sure it makes sense and sounds right to the reader.
Math

We are finishing up chapter 4 this week with our chapter test on Wednesday.  To summarize this chapter, we will learn how to use part-part whole in addition and subtraction, add on and take away sets, compare two sets, and real world word problems with 2 steps.

Science-Social Studies
We are getting started with the  Project Based Learning (PBL) with 3rd grade! Our PBL is about looking and and creating our own maps. We will focus specifically on South America. Also, we started our “Monday Message” lesson which we take a deep look into current events with Flocabulary’s “Week in Rap JR.” Students are expected to participate by engaging in answering comprehension questions, and debating on curated topics of the week.

levelsDifferentiation in our class:

I want to highlight all the great differentiation happening in Readers Workshop! Students are working hard to master the “stop and jot” technique. Some students have grasped this concept earlier than others, so they have been modeling their thinking to the whole class. I am so proud of students supporting one another in the journey to be amazing readers.
